PART-TIME LIBRARY CLERK AT BRIARCLIFF MANOR PUBLIC LIBRARY

The mission of the Briarcliff Manor Public Library is to provide community members of all ages with convenient access to print and digital resources within our library and beyond; enriching educational and social programs; and opportunities for interaction and engagement in a warm, welcoming environment. We are seeking dependable and friendly people focused on delivering high quality customer service to join our team.

There are two positions open. Both positions are part-time paying $18.13 per hour. We are seeking candidates who can work at least 11.5 hours a week. The maximum number of hours per week is 17.5. These positions report to the Director.

SCHEDULE: The following are openings in the library’s schedule. Shifts can be full days or split into half days.

  • Mondays at the Circulation Desk 10am to 5pm
  • Thursdays at the Circulation Desk 10am to 7pm
  • Fridays at the Circulation Desk 2pm to 5pm
  • Saturdays at the Circulation Desk 10am to 5pm
  • Saturdays in the Children’s Room 10am to 5pm

DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Assists library patrons at the Circulation Desk and/or Children’s Room
  • Responds to in-person, telephone, and email inquires
  • Provides basic reference and reader’s advisory service; refers patrons to Librarians as needed
  • At the Circulation Desk, performs a full range of procedures using the computerized library system including
  • Checks in and out library materials
  • Issues library cards
  • Collects fines/fees
  • Empties and processes book drop
  • Manages items on the requested items/holds list
  • Assists patrons in maintaining their library records in accordance with the policies of the library
  • In the Children’s Room:
  • Engages with visitors about materials and services including the Summer Reading Programs, scavenger hunts, required reading for school, and passive activities
  • Assists young patrons and their caregivers in the use of the online catalog
  • Enforces library policies
  • Responsibilities include young adults using the Teen Room

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent REQUIRED
  • Strong computer skills, including the ability to navigate Google Suite, send and print emails
  • Excellent customer service skills, including experience working with a diverse public
  • Ability to multitask and adapt readily to changing software, technologies and processes
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to express ideas clearly and accurately, both orally and in writing
  • The capability to do physical work such as standing and bending over, and to lift, pull and push objects weighing up to 30 pounds

PREFERRED SKILLS:

  • Ability to exercise initiative and independent judgment
  • Ability to make decisions, follow procedures, and interpret policies
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, superiors, and the public
  • Ability to organize job duties and work independently
  • Interest in a wide range of reading material to assist with reader’s advisory, particularly in the Children’s Room/Teen Room
