Annual Compensation Range: $21.52-25.87 DOE

Position Summary & Responsibilities

The Office of the Kansas Attorney General (OAG) is accepting applications to fill an Investigator position in our Conceal Carry Licensing Unit.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Receives and reviews conceal carry license applications and corresponding criminal history background reports to determine eligibility for licensure; identifies applicant omissions; conducts state and national record checks through the Kansas Criminal Justice Information System (KCJIS), National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS).
  • Communicates by letter, FAX, email and telephone to obtain law enforcement offense reports and court documents; analyzes documents, statements, and other related information to determine relevance.
  • Consults and works with Assistant Attorneys General regarding potential prohibitors; approves license applications that meet all statutory requirements.
  • Accepts telephone calls and walk-in visits from the public seeking information about conceal carry. Responds to inquiries from public and governmental entities and provides appropriate guidance and/or referral.
  • May be assigned to participate in training and public outreach activities, such as presentations to conceal carry handgun trainers, law enforcement groups and other organizations.

Qualifications

Education :

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in business administration, communications, criminal justice, or related field(s). Professional or technical experience, as deemed by the Attorney General to be sufficient qualification to perform the assigned work, may be substituted for the required college study.

Licensing & Certification :

  • A valid driver's license when operating a state vehicle, a private vehicle, or a rental vehicle for the benefit of the State

Minimum Qualifications :

  • At least one year of experience interacting with clients, customers, or the public in a customer service, or problem resolution setting
  • Strong proficiency in MS Office (Word, Outlook, Excel) and Adobe Acrobat
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills. Exceptional attention to detail

Preferred Qualifications :

  • Current or prior KCJIS or NCIC certification
  • Experience with an electronic document management/case management/case management system preferred

Post-Offer, Pre-employment Requirements

  • As a condition of employment, candidate(s) are subject to a pre-employment screening process to include a fingerprint and name-based criminal history records check and reference/background check of past and present employers. The pre-employment screening process will be waived for current OAG personnel who have previously completed the screening requirements.
  • In this position, you would be authorized access to private information to the extent necessary to perform the assigned duties. Employees of the OAG are required to protect against unauthorized access to such information, ensure the security and privacy of such information, and disclose any anticipated threats or hazards to such information. Employees must be cautious not to release this information to the public or other individuals, including but not limited to OAG employees who have not been authorized or who do not have a legitimate organizational, departmental, or business need to know. Any questions regarding releasing such information to another person should be directed to the employee’s supervisor.
  • State of Kansas Tax Clearance Certificate. The successful applicant (even non-residents) must obtain a valid Kansas Certificate of Tax Clearance by accessing the Kansas Department of Revenue's website within 10 days of the date the applicant has been offered the employment position . A Tax Clearance is a comprehensive tax account review to determine and ensure that an individual's account is compliant with all primary Kansas Tax Laws. A Tax Clearance expires every 90 days.
